John W. Berninger died peacefully on Wednesday, August 20, at the Falmouth Hospital after a long illness. He was 61.

John was born on June 18, 1953 in Jamaica Plains in the Bronx to John Berninger and Barbara Walter. He was raised with his family in New York, graduated from Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, N.Y., and attended Pace University.

He was a loving and caring family man. He held extreme admiration for his wife and six children. He moved his family from Lake Peekskill, N.Y., to Martha’s Vineyard in 1994. John spent most of his employment as a truck driver at Chappaqua Highway Department and Takemmy Laundry and Dry Cleaners in Vineyard Haven. He was also an original and standing member of Westchester County Chapter of Cycle Tramp Motorcycle Club.

John was predeceased by his two sons, John M. Berninger and Joseph R. Berninger. He is survived by his wife Tina M. (Laoretti) Berninger; daughters Amanda R. Berninger, Salean E. Berninger, Alexis A. Berninger, and his son, Christian T. Berninger. He is also survived by his brother Thomas Berninger and wife Kathy, and his three sisters: Joanne Lapierre and husband Rick, Susan Pollard and Elizabeth Requena; and by three grandchildren: Destiney Berninger, Autumn Nelson and Coal Trott, and several nieces and nephews and his loving companion, his dog, Bella.

Visiting hours will be held in the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home on Oak Bluffs, on Saturday, August 30, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. with a funeral service at 1 p.m. officiated by the Rev. Michael Nagle.
