Ruth M. (Pachico) Snider of Martha’s Vineyard, formerly of Gloucester, died Sept. 22 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. She was 86.

Born on Martha’s Vineyard on March 27, 1928, she was the daughter of the late William and Christine (Anderson) Pachico.

Ruth was a graduate of Tisbury High School. Following her marriage to the late Robert L. Snider Sr., they moved to Rockport for a short period and later to Gloucester where they resided for more than 40 years. Ruth and Robert had owned and operated the Wingaersheek Motel for many years. She also worked as a supervisor at the former Central Grammar School in Gloucester.

She was a very active and devout member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Gloucester. She was also a Cub Scout den mother for her sons while they were growing up.

Following their retirement, Ruth and Robert returned to Martha’s Vineyard and traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad. Ruth found pleasure living close to the sea and shared both her love and knowledge of Gloucester and the Vineyard with her children and grandchildren. She had a generous spirit, a kind heart and boundless optimism. Her greatest joy was her family and she took great pride in her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her four children: Robert L. Snider Jr. and wife Wendy of Gloucester, Walter M. Snider and wife Karen of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Patricia C. Slade and husband David of Manchester-by-the-Sea, and Michael W. Snider of Yarmouth Port; grandchildren Phil Snider and wife Mindy of Atlanta, Sharon Maxwell and husband Eric of Pelham, N.H., Heather DePriest and husband Shaun of Georgetown, Brent Snider and wife Michelle of Branford, Conn., Lorin Buksa and husband Michael of Lynn, Brittany Slade and fiance Kyle White of Medford, Catherine Dorrington and husband James of South Portland, Me., and Jessica Richardson and husband Timothy of Northwood, N.H.; as well as 14 great-grandchildren; sisters Margaret Myers of Hardy, Iowa, and Christine Fisher of Vineyard Haven; and cousin George Santos of Vineyard Haven.

In addition to her husband Robert, she was predeceased by her brother, Lawrence H. Pachico.

A graveside service will be held in Oak Grove Cemetery in Vineyard Haven on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
