Victor Oliver 3rd died surrounded by his family and friends on Oct. 27. He was 57.

Victor was born on May 5, 1957 in Oak Bluffs. He was proud of his Portuguese heritage and was quick to say he was a Pachico as well.

He started shucking scallops after school at his grandfather’s fish market, John’s. He found his love of the ocean from his parents Bunny and Butch. If there was a spot to clam, quahog, crab or scallop, he was on it. Victor became a commercial fisherman for several years and in the off-season he would scallop. He also loved to hunt.

After high school Victor worked for Ben David Motors. He was one of the first certified master technicians on the Island. He was a heavy equipment operator and worked for several excavation companies as well. For the past 15 years he was head of maintenance at the Harbor Landing Hotel in Vineyard Haven.

Being mechanically inclined, Victor would work on any vehicle with two or four wheels. He was always puttering around his shop, and if it had a motor he could make it scream. Lawn mowers, mini bikes or bicycles — he put his special touch on everything he built. He built several motorcycles that were show quality. When he left the Ritz, he was sure to pull a wheelie up Circuit avenue. If it wasn’t fast, it wasn’t Victor.

He had several boats, the speedboat Redline and his favorite green scallop boat with his Portuguese flag flying in the wind on the bow. His last project was a 1965 International Scout that he and his brother John were working on.

Victor was always quick to make people laugh with his sense of humor. He will be greatly missed.

Victor is survived by his mother Bunny, his sister Monica, his brothers, John and his wife Mel, and Wade and his wife Pam. He is also survived by nieces and nephews Amanda, Michael and Taylor Sloditskie, Damien and Tabitha Oliver, and John Oliver 2nd, and many extended family and friends. Victor was predeceased by his father Victor Oliver Sr.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 2:30 p.m. in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Vineyard Haven with the Rev. Michael Nagle officiating. Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.

The family would like to thank everyone for their gracious generosity of donations, cards and support from the benefit.
