Herbert Tilton Loved the Outdoors

Herbert (Butchie) Carlton Tilton 3rd of Edgartown, a gardener, craftsman and outdoorsman extraordinaire, died Nov. 1. He was 58.

Born in Oct. 19, 1956, he was the son of Herbert (Towser) Tilton Jr. and loving husband of Lisa Tilton. Butchie was the father of Cheyenne Tilton, Tony Cortez and wife Vikki, Bradley Cortez and fiance Vani, Nicholas Butler and wife Olivia; brother of Bonnie Tilton and April Tilton Poisson, and grandfather of Delilah and Archer Butler. He was predeceased by his mother Judith Etta (Ray) Tilton.

He was teacher of many and friend to all. His laughter will forever be remembered. For Butchie, fishing was not an escape from life but rather an immersion into it.

I had the good fortune of meeting Herb earlier this year at the Clark Cancer Center in Falmouth where we both were having daily radiation treatments. We spent a lot of time together over a period of several weeks. I liked "Butchie"instantly. What a good man he was. I am devastated over his death as we shared a strong bond from our common illness. I wish that his fate mirrored mine. He deserved much better than the suffering he went through. He promised to take me fishing when I return to Falmouth this winter for follow-up tests for my cancer. I'll have to wait a little for that fishing trip but it will happen. Rest in peace my friend. You were there for me when I needed support and camaraderie. You helped me more than you know. I owe you.
