Richard Cargill died on Jan. 28. He was 84.

He was born in Providence, R.I., and was raised in Fairhaven and Martha’s Vineyard. A graduate of Fairhaven High School in 1948, Richard attended Springfield College where he studied physical education. This is where he met the love of his life, Janice, now deceased. They were married in 1953 and were married for 51 years.

After serving in the Korean War in the drum corps, he and Janice resided in Ewing, N.J. In 1974 they moved to Hyannis, and later to West Yarmouth.

Richard managed Cook’s General Store in New Jersey for 22 years and then worked at Cape Cod Hospital. His passions were swimming and teaching swimming, drumming and tutoring.

He is survived by three children, Deborah Cargill Culotta of Knoxville, Tenn., Diana Cargill Cool of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Gregory Cargill of Vero Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren, Melissa Kane, Joshua Kane and Christina Cargill; and by his brother, David Cargill of Franklin, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Jo-Ann Ewing of Edgartown.

Visiting hours are planned at Rose Mortuary in Knoxville, Tenn. A funeral service and burial next to his wife Janice will take place in Ewing, N.J., at a later date.
