Bette (Flanders) Carroll died on Friday, May 29 at her home in Chilmark after a brief illness. She was 92.

Bette was predeceased by her husband Marshall Emmett Carroll, Sr. She was the mother of Marshall Emmett Carroll and R. Samuel Carroll. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 2 at 11 a.m. at the Abel’s Hill Cemetery, South Road, Chilmark. A potluck reception will follow at the Chilmark Community Center.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Chilmark Community Church, 9 Menemsha Cross Road, Chilmark, MA 02535. Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs. Visit www.ccgfuneralhome.com for online guest book and information.

I didn't know Bette, but I was immediately draw to her picture and her apparent warm and friendly New England spirit.

Aunt Bette was like a grandmother to me and my brother and sister. She lived life the way we all should live it - on her terms and with absolute vigor. Her passing is a huge loss, not just for the community but for those of us who looked to her as a matriarch and as an institution. God Bless and rest in peace Aunt Bette. I love you very much.
