Robert Warren Norton died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, June 12 at his home with his cat Nicki, his cousin Joyce, his wonderful caregiver Zaina, and his dear friend Kate by his side. He was 64 years old.

Bobby was the beloved son of the late Gloria (Authier) and Warren Norton of Edgartown. He was a graduate of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, class of 1969. Bobby joined the Air Force after graduation and upon discharge, moved to Boston where he lived for many years. Bobby loved his work as manager and bartender at various Boston establishments until he returned to the Vineyard in 1991 to be closer to his aging parents, to whom he was quite devoted.

Bobby loved tending his yard and gardens, chatting on the phone with far-flung family, and spending time with friends. If you were lucky enough to be his friend, he gave so much back with boundless energy for physical and emotional support, day or night. He was known for doing so many acts of kindness for others in the community. He was kind and loving to animals, domestic and wild alike, especially his wonderful cat Nicki and the squirrels and wild birds around his house. During summers, Bobby loved nothing more than being out on the water in his kayak.

In January of 2012 Bobby suffered a severe stroke and became more limited in his scope of activities. Fiercely independent, he struggled to continue his life in as normal a manner as possible, mastering many things with his less-than-fully-abled body. He made daily trips to Linda Jean’s for breakfast or lunch, where he became a member of the LJ’s family and felt truly cared for.

Bobby was known for his deep concern for others, quick wit and big smile. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 27 at 11 a.m. at the New Westside Cemetery in Edgartown, followed by a reception to celebrate his life. For those who would like to make a donation in his memory, please make contributions to Hope Hospice, PO Box 4188, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568 or the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard, PO Box 1829, Edgartown, MA 02539.
