John A. (Wes) Wesley Jr. of Edgartown, beloved husband and best friend of Mary Beth Hlivak-Wesley, died peacefully on Friday, June 12 in the loving company of Mary Beth and his mother Fran.

John was born in Cleveland, Ohio on Oct. 12, 1970. From an early age, he was drawn to the water, growing up spending summers on Lake Chautauqua, N.Y. It was no surprise that he gravitated to Martha’s Vineyard, coming down summers while in school in Boston.

He introduced Mary Beth, herself a Clevelander, to Martha’s Vineyard in 1994. They were married at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Edgartown on Oct. 15, 2000.

John was an employee of the Edgartown Reading Room. He took great pride in his longtime association with the club and its members. Most recently he could be seen going off-shore fishing with club member Capt. Phil Smith.

True to his Midwestern upbringing, he held loyalty, friendship, and being true to his word dearly. Yearly off-season trips back to Cleveland would be spent rekindling friendships while rooting for his childhood teams.

His many friends will remember his vibrant blue eyes, his unfailing friendship and his zest for life. All those who knew him are left better off for having had him as a friend.

An Island service will be planned for a later date.
