Dr. Eugene Bradley of Skillman, N.J. died Thursday, Nov. 5 surrounded by his loving family. He was 92.

Born in County Derry, Ireland on April 2, 1923, Eugene graduated from St. Columb’s College in Derry and earned his medical degree at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Dublin. In 1949 he moved to New York city and completed his internship and residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in Jersey City, N.J.

He served for two years in the U.S. Army as chief of obstetrics and gynecology at Madigan Army General Hospital in Tacoma, Wash., reaching the rank of major. The following years were spent in private practice in Bellaire, Ohio and Oakland, N.J. He was honored by the Passaic County and New Jersey Medical Societies for his 50 years of medical practice.

He raised his family in Pompton Lakes, N.J. and Edgartown, where he first visited his wife’s aunt and uncle, the late Gordon and Kathleen Shurtleff of Edgartown, in the 1950s. After his retirement he spent many happy summers gardening at his Katama home and exploring up-Island hiking paths. His beautiful landscaping remains and will serve as a reminder to friends and family of his love of the Island’s natural beauty.

He is survived by his beloved wife and soul mate of 60 years, Eileen R. Bradley; his daughter, Eileen Bradley; and his four sons, daughters in law and 11 grandchildren: Brian and Jan Bradley and their children Kayla and Elena; Patrick and Andrea Bradley and their children Nicholas, Connor, and Nora; Drs. Sean Bradley and Karen DeSimone and their children Kyra, Ryan, Jason and Evan; and Brendan Bradley and Bridget Poole and their children Fiona and Anna.
