Phyllis Norton Bartol died peacefully just before dawn on Feb. 8. Her parents Louise S. and Philip B. Norton were longtime residents of Edgartown, where Phyllis grew up amongst many Norton cousins.
With a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Simmons College, Phyllis interned and practiced nursing at Massachusetts General Hospital. She settled in Milton after her marriage to Louis C. Bartol. Together they raised sheep and chickens. She continued to help manage the family farmland after her husband’s death. Phyllis loved animals, especially golden retrievers. Her fondness for birds encompassed fostering Rusty the red-tailed hawk and a variety of other raptors for the Blue Hill Trailside Museum in Milton.
She was an active member of the Milton Garden Club for many years. Her miniature “candle-lit” boxwood trees and pinecone angels were popular at the club’s annual Christmas sale.
Phyllis is survived by her sister Marcia N. Leeper and niece Lisa Saunders, both of Pagosa Springs, Colo., and her cousins Bailey S. Norton and Floyd C. Norton on Martha’s Vineyard. She also leaves five nieces, nine nephews, and 25 grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A springtime service will be scheduled at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Milton. Interment will be private.
Donations in her memory may be made to St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 112 Randolph Ave., Milton, MA, 02186.
