Lorraine M. (Bergeron) Patrick of Cambridge and West Tisbury died peacefully at her home in the care of her family on March 9. She was 85.
The third of six sisters, Lorraine was born in the Pawtucketville neighborhood of Lowell. She attended St. Jeanne D’Arc Elementary School and Keith Hall High School, where she learned secretarial skills and developed a lifelong love of reading and learning.
As a young woman, Lorraine worked as a secretary and receptionist at Vertipile Inc., and later for the late Dr. Thomas Sweeney. She was also a proud member of the U.S. Navy WAVES (Women’s Reserve) from 1951 to 1954.
She was married to John D. Patrick, who died in 2013, and they lived in Lowell for many years before moving to Martha’s Vineyard in 1991 and finally to Cambridge in 2004, while continuing to spend summers on Martha’s Vineyard. During her years on the Island, Lorraine was a volunteer for the West Tisbury library and for the Up-Island Council on Aging. An avid reader, she loved mystery novels, biographies, and historical non-fiction. She also enjoyed baking bread and a good game of Scrabble.
She was the daughter of Joseph Aime and Madeline (Breault) Bergeron, both deceased. She is survived by her two sons and their wives, John D. Patrick M.D., and Sharon Britton of Cambridge and West Tisbury and Neil and Susan Patrick of Glastonbury, Conn.; three grandsons, Logan Patrick of Cambridge, Andrew Patrick and his wife Katelyn of Rocky Hill, Conn., and Jordan Patrick, his partner Kristen Stone, and their daughter Victoria of Glastonbury, Conn.; two sisters and their husbands, Thelma and Paul Lahme of York Beach, Me., and Dolores and Richard Fairburn of North Berwick, Me.; and by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Beatrice Campbell of Naples, Fla., Gloria Quinn of Falmouth, Me., and Constance Cox of Lowell.
Following her wishes, Lorraine will be interred with her husband John in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne in a private service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lorraine’s name to Doctors Without Borders USA, P.O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741. Remembrances and condolences can be left at keefefuneralhome.com.
