George J. Santos, 92

George J. Santos of Vineyard Haven died on Wednesday, June 1. He was 92.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.

A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 8 at 11 a.m. at St. Augustine's Church on Franklin street in Vineyard Haven, with full military honors offered by the Veterans of Martha's Vineyard.

Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Saugus at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 9.

I knew George for most of my life. He was a family friend and a great guy. Wasn't his nickname "Kilowatt" when he worked at Cape & Vineyard Electric Co.? I seem to remember that for some reason. He and my Uncle Dick and Uncle Tom enjoyed many highballs every Thursday when they were able to get together over the past several years and he joined us for the annual Fall dinners at the old stone church. I will miss seeing him along Main Street. RIP Mr. Santos!!

To Kilowatts family. Another islander of the good old times are gone and so are the memories. My uncle, Bob Hughes, introduced us one day and from then one I always said hello to him. His face will be missed in the Post Office square.

George knew more about the history of Martha's Vineyard high school basketball than anyone. His Tisbury High School team won the island championship when he was a senior. In discussing the rivalry between the three high schools in basketball, he said that each high school had its turn at winning; no high school dominated for long.
