Sumner Wright Mead died Sept. 6 of natural causes at his home in Wilmette, Ill. He was 92 and a fifth generation summer resident of Edgartown.

His father, Sumner Adelbert Mead, was a prominent member of the Edgartown Yacht Club’s race committee from the 1940s to the 1960s, and his mother, Ruth Appeldoorn, was the founder of the Martha’s Vineyard Art Association and charter member of Old Sculpin Art Gallery.

Originally from Barrington, Ill., the family would make their way east for the summer months. Sumner Sr. would commute weekly to Boston to run the family business, Dwinell-Wright Company, pioneers in the coffee roasting industry.

Sumner will be interred alongside his parents and twin brother at Tower Hill cemetery, on outer harbor in Katama. The cemetery, also known as Green Hollow, has graves marking pre-Revolutionary and Revolutionary War heroes dating back to the 1700s. In the ‘70s, Sumner’s family was instrumental in resurrecting this historical cemetery and once again making it accessible for burial.

Sumner is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy Mead (nee Price). He was a loving father to Sumner Price Mead and his wife Penny, Laura Mead Carlson and her husband Brett, and Melinda Mead Hurley and her husband Bill. He was the cherished grandfather of Elisabeth, Sumner and Katie Mead; Grace, Brooke, Price and Steele Carlson; and Will, Paige and Tyler Hurley.

A memorial service was held Sept. 22 at Kenilworth Union Church in Kenilworth, Ill. An online guestbook is available at donnellanfuneral.com.
