Karen Hinckley Campbell, a beloved mother, grandmother, and sister, died peacefully on Monday, Oct. 17. She was 83.

Born Jan. 30, 1933 in Logan, Utah to Vernon and Zelda Hinckley of Preston, Idaho, she was the eldest daughter and one of eight children in a large and loving family. Her early years were spent on the family farm and at school in Preston, where she was the valedictorian of her high school class. She graduated with honors in 1955 from the University of Idaho, where she was president of the Associated Women Students, a member of the Mortar Board, and received the Phi Chi Theta award for outstanding woman student in the school of business. Also in 1955, Karen married Robert S. Campbell, after which the couple moved from Idaho to Salt Lake City. They were later divorced.

Karen lived a life of service and altruism. She was a career homemaker, raised three children, and was deeply passionate about community and church service. She was a member of the LDS church, served in several callings during her life, and enjoyed the kindness and generosity of her church community in her later years.

She loved to travel, most often to Martha’s Vineyard, where she spent many wonderful times with family and friends at her summer home. Whether walking on Lambert’s Cove beach collecting shells or just watching the sunset, the Vineyard was her retreat, where she was most herself. She also loved cruises, visiting the Mediterranean and the Far East. She loved to cook and entertain and was a voracious reader and a jigsaw puzzle enthusiast.

Family was important to Karen; she never missed an opportunity to spend time with her children, grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She always attended the annual family reunion. Karen will be deeply missed by all.

She is survived by her children: Courtney Campbell and his wife Marie of Corvallis, Ore.; Randall Campbell and his wife Daska of New Canaan, Conn.; and Kristin Campbell and her husband Robert Samuelson of Washington D.C. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren and her two great-grandsons. Karen also leaves behind seven loving siblings, four sisters, and three brothers.

A memorial service will be held at the LDS Chapel at 4407 S. Fortuna Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah, on Friday, Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. Interment will be held at the Fairview Cemetery in Preston, Idaho later that day, at 2:30 p.m.
