Nelson Crosby Smith of Edgartown died on Wednesday evening, April 5 at the Mass General Hospital. He was 92.

He was married to Ann L. (Bernard) Smith.

Memorial visiting hours will take place on Friday, April 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 15 at 11 a.m. at the New Westside Cemetery on Robinson Road in Edgartown, with military honors provided by the Veterans of Martha’s Vineyard.

Donations in his memory may be made to the VFW Post #9261 Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1437, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.

It was a pleasure to know Nelson. Always had a story that ended with a good laugh.One of the nicest men anyone could possibly meet. Would give you the shirt off his back and go out of his way to help,no matter what the situation.You will be missed. Have a tanqueray and tonic for me. RIP.

Nelson Smith, driving me on the Chappy Ferry when I was 10 years old and me being able to return the favor 40 years later , driving him in the Edgartown 4th of July Parade, great friend and neighbor. Godspeed Nelson...and PS. thanks for all the golf balls you found for the kids !

A chance meeting and conversation with Nelson Smith was always one of the benefits of living in our small community. He was an Island gentleman in the finest sense of the word.
