Richard D. Hathaway

Richard D. Hathaway died peacefully at his home in Edgartown on Sunday evening, June 25. He was 90.

He was the husband of Janice (Holbrook) Hathaway. According to his wishes he will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

A complete obituary will appear in a future edition of the Gazette. Donations may be made in his memory to Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard, P.O. Box 1748, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.

Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs, ccgfuneralhome.com.

One of his Derby winners hung on the wall of the dance floor at the Edgartown Boys Club for years in the 1950s. When a boy walked across the floor to ask a girl to dance, it was an admired part of the scenery. It was woven into the fabric of growing up in Edgartown, as was Dick. He was generous with his fishing knowledge (and gear), and those he taught tended to pass it on, always crediting him. I benefited from that tradition.

The term " Old Salt" may certainly pass with him and the likes of Nelson Smith... enjoyed tipping my hat to him at the docks or the post office. He understood the ebb and flow of the seasons and all that came with it ...

A good friend and neighbor. We spent many a night prowling squibnocket in search of the Big One. He was a great fisherman. I was about 15 when I got my first Bass, with Dick On Chappy. Where he is now its tight lines and that damn pink Atom Plug.

When I was a kid, Richard and my parents, Mildred and George Arnold, used to fish during the Derby on every beach on the Island and I was lucky to be there with them. Dick is truly in the Hall of Fame of the MV Striped bass derby. My love and regards to Jan, from Marie and Bill. Dick and Jan visited us here in Lake Worth, by Lake Osborne, and he will be missed deeply. My mother Mildred reminded me that Dick was my Godfather, and may be rest in peace in Heaven with God, forever.
