Steven (Brooks) Chaffee of Boston died suddenly on April 19 in Cambridge. He was 40.
Born on March 2, 1979, in Providence, R.I., he had lived in Tiverton and for many years in Barrington, R.I., and summered in Edgartown. He was an automobile enthusiast, avid hiker, mountain bicyclist and outdoorsman. He graduated from the Woodhall School in Connecticut and Colby Sawyer College in New Hampshire.
Despite his personal struggles, Brooks had a big heart and loved seeking adventure. He loved the sea and ponds of Martha’s Vineyard and the culture of the Island. He enjoyed kayaking, shellfishing and the junior yacht club sailing program at the Edgartown Yacht Club. He went hiking and mountain biking all over New England. He traveled to India and France during his youth.
He spent many summers working at Adam Cab and Wheel Happy Bike Shop.
He is survived by his loving parents, Steven and Sandy Chaffee of Edgartown; three brothers, Brad, Peter and Ben; grandmothers Anita Hawkins and Dorothy Chaffee; as well one niece, many aunts, uncles and extended family. He was predeceased by his grandfathers, Henry Chaffee and George Hawkins Sr., and a grandmother, Mary Stearns Chaffee.
Brooks’s final journey will bring him back home to Edgartown, where interment will be private. A memorial service will be held at the Edgartown Yacht Club on Saturday, June 1 from noon to 2 p.m.
