Dudley Hubbard Grimes died peacefully at home on May 18, surrounded by his family. He was 71 and had been a loving husband to Mary (Richards) Grimes for 36 years.

He was born Jan. 10, 1948 in Waterbury, Conn., the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Hubbard) Grimes.

He attended the Hotchkiss School and the University of North Carolina before graduating from Southern Connecticut State University with a bachelor’s degree in English.

He grew up spending summers on Martha’s Vineyard and moved to the Island full time in 1972. He and Mary met in 1981 and were married in 1983.

They moved back to Connecticut in 1989, where they designed and built a house together in Cornwall before settling in Goshen.

He always loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. He loved tending to the earth. Certified as a master gardener, he owned and operated his own landscaping business for many years.

In addition to his wife, he leaves a son, Tyler Flint Grimes; a brother, Timothy Grimes; and beloved pets, Rita, Gonzo and Leodi.

Friends may call on Sunday, May 26 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 922 Main street, Winsted, Conn. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
