Kathleen (Kay) Selover Stevenson died on June 4 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. She was 85.
Kay was born in Canandaigua, N.Y., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Selover. She was a graduate of Canandaigua Academy and Russel Sage College, class of 1958, where she received a degree in early childhood education.
She was married to Samuel H. Stevenson, USMC (Ret.) for 60 years and was active in the Marine Corps wives club while stationed with him at Camp Pendleton, Ca., New London, Conn., Quantico, Va. and Springfield, Va.
She taught in elementary schools in Albany, N.Y., New London, and at the Gunston Hall Academy in Northern Virginia.
Kay and Samuel moved to West Tisbury full time in 1988, where she continued her work with children by volunteering as a reader at the West Tisbury School.
She was active in the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club, Polly Hill Arboretum and the St. Andrews Altar Guild. She was also an accomplished seamstress, quilter, knitter and gardener and enjoyed working at the Heath Hen Quilt Shop in Vineyard Haven.
She was widely viewed by those who knew her as a great friend and a compassionate and warm soul.
She is survived by her husband Samuel Stevenson of West Tisbury; brother David Selover of Turner Falls; son James Scott Stevenson of Mooresville, N.C.; daughter Rebecca Cole Stevenson English of Summerville, S.C.,;and two grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church on July 16.
