Elizabeth (Betsy) Meredith Rigo died suddenly on June 14 in New York city. She was 66.

Betsy was a frequent visitor to the Island her entire life. Her grandmother, Sylvia Welch, had a home in Eastville, where Betsy spent her summers with her family. Her aunt, Anne Welch Gordon, lived in retirement in Eastville and another aunt, Beth Welch, currently resides in Vineyard Haven. Betsy worked for a short time at the Vineyard Gazette as a college intern.

After graduating from Hampshire College, Betsy worked for Scientific American in New York. She married the love of her life, John Rigo, an account executive at Marsh and McLennan, in Clinton, N.J. in 1992. The couple did not have any children.

Mr. Rigo passed while working in the World Trade Center on 9/11, deeply saddening Betsy. She was helped immensely by a large group of friends and colleagues, including Mr. Rigo’s sister, Jan.

She is survived by her brother, Jonathan, of Denver; her niece, Catherine Meredith, of Denver and her nephew, Jackson Meredith, of Portland, Oregon. A memorial service was held for her at the 9/11 Memorial in lower Manhattan on August 12. Her remains will be interred at the West Tisbury cemetery beside her husband.
