Hope (Gerry) Tilton Albertine died Oct. 7 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital in the loving arms of her daughter, Joyce Albertine Bowker.

She was born July 4, 1928 in Cambridge.

After the Depression, she set aside her early dreams of becoming a nun in a nearby convent and went to work to support her siblings.

Gerry was happy on the Vineyard, beginning as a visitor in 1979 and as a permanent resident since 2013. Her favorite beach was Menemsha, even though her fair skin and ginger hair necessitated head-to-toe covering in bright sun. She was delighted to take a boat ride, was a good sport and an easy companion.

She made her home with her daughter, who is director of the Up Island Council on Aging, and granddaughter.

Quiet and unassuming, she liked ice cream dinners, sweets of all kinds and laughing at Inga. Her green eyes were gentle and caring; she had a sweet smile that beguiled a strong and intense spirit.

She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Connell Albertine, in 2012; a daughter, Nancy Dutney, in 2013; and twin brothers, Robert and Richard Tilton and brother George Tilton. In addition to her daughter, she is survived by three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and her youngest brother, Daniel Tilton of Westwood.

She was interred in a private ceremony in the Edgartown cemetery on Oct. 9 with the Rev. Father Michael Nagle officiating. The family is planning a memorial in the spring.
