Dorothy E. White died peacefully at home in Vineyard Haven on July 9. She was 100.

She was born Jan. 2, 1921 to Isabel and Manny Francis in Provincetown. She graduated from Falmouth High School in 1940 and Hyannis Teacher’s College in 1944. She received a master’s degree from State Teachers College in Bridgewater.

She married George R. Hinckley 2nd of Oak Bluffs and they had two children, George R. Hinckley 3rd and Patricia C. Hinckley. Her husband George died tragically while working for the Cape and Vineyard Electric Company during Hurricane Carol in 1954. Dorothy taught private kindergarten out of her Oak Bluffs home and also taught first grade at the Oak Bluffs School.

She and her children then moved to Falmouth and she taught first grade at Otis Air National Guard Base. She remarried Sidney White on Cape Cod and had a son, Sidney Robert White. The family moved back to the Vineyard in 1965, building a new home in Vineyard Haven. They bought and ran Bangs Market on Main street in Vineyard Haven, and Dorothy taught first grade at the Edgartown School for many years. After retiring, she devoted her time to singing in the choir and serving on numerous boards at Christ Methodist Church. She loved gardening, cooking, baking, and especially her family.

She is survived by her daughter Patricia and son in law Larry Sylvia of Vineyard Haven; son Robert White and daughter in law Shannon of Clayton, N.C.; daughter in law Judith Hinckley of Falmouth; and her great-grandchildren Olyvia G. Houston of Montague, Mya P. Houston of West Tisbury and Cole I. Houston of Vineyard Haven.

She was predeceased by her parents, her siblings, both husbands, her son George R. Hinckley 3rd of Falmouth and her only grandchild, Rachael Houston of Vineyard Haven.

A graveside service will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery in Oak Bluffs on Saturday, July 17 at 11 a.m.
