George (Bob) Cheevers of Dorchester and Edgartown died peacefully on June 29 from pancreatic cancer. He was 63.

He was the beloved son of the late Charles and Eileen Patterson Cheevers.

His grandparents George and Nellie Patterson bought a cottage on Pinehurst Road in Edgartown in 1929 to be near his grandfather’s aunt, Margaret Norton of Edgartown-West Tisbury Road. Bob first visited the family cottage as a baby in July 1959. Like his siblings, he cherished his Edgartown summers.

Bob was a lifelong learner. He was a proud graduate of Catholic Memorial, Worcester Academy and Harvard University. He held post-graduate degrees from the University of Massachusetts and Simmons College.

Brilliant and one of a kind, he was a longtime Boston public schools teacher, including the Muriel Snowden International School; an authentic Abraham Lincoln portrayer; and a cat lover who leaves behind his cherished black cat Jack.

He is survived by his siblings Mary Ellen Geary and her husband George, Charles Cheevers and his wife Stephanie, Deborah Driscoll, James Cheevers and his wife, Diane, and Joseph Cheevers and his wife, Maria. He was the dear uncle of ten nieces and nephews and five grandnephews.

Visiting hours were held on July 5 at John J. O’Connor & Sons Funeral Home in Dorchester. His funeral mass was held on July 6 at St. Brendan’s Church in Dorchester.

Donations can be made in his name to the charity of one’s choice.
