John Callahan Jr. died Sept. 1. He was 84.
He was a resident of Bonita Springs, Fla., former longtime resident of Huntington, N.Y. and part-time resident of West Tisbury.
John was born in Hoosick Falls, N.Y. to John and Pansy Tilley Callahan and was known as Johnny to his family and friends. Athletics were his first love. He became a great athlete and coach, achieving many honors in basketball and baseball in the north country and Huntington. That competitive spirit would shape his zest for life and the relationships created along the way.
He attended Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y., the first in his family to attend college. While there, he met the love of his life, Barbara, and lifelong friends whom he was in contact with until his death. His greatest desire in life was to make people laugh.
He worked for State Farm insurance as an agent for more than 50 years and received many awards over the years.
He enjoyed summers on Martha’s Vineyard, playing golf at Farm Neck Golf Course. He enjoyed winters and springs in Bonita Springs and playing golf at Pelican’s Nest Golf Course.
John was a loving husband to Barbara; dear father to sons Kevin and his wife Margaret, Tim, and his daughter Lauren; adored grandfather to Kaitlyn and her husband Ricky, Jacqueline and her husband Bryan, Ian and Emily; and an uncle, cousin and loyal friend to others.
Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 12 to 1 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m., both at Chapman Funerals & Cremations in Oak Bluffs. A celebration of life will be held at a future time.
