Alvida Cleaveland Riggs Jones of West Tisbury died peacefully at her home on May 8. She was 99.
She was born in Passaic, N.J. on June 28, 1923 to Dionis Coffin and Sydney Noyes Riggs.
Alvida graduated with a degree in chemistry from Antioch College and went on to work at Merck Chemical Company. There she met Ralph Jones (RJ) who, she stated, was a “jock” in whom she had no interest. Apparently the chemistry overruled her original assessment and they married in 1947.
She lived a long and full life. Among the things she enjoyed were gardening, music, reading, travel, cooking and outdoor activities with her husband, four children and, later, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In retirement, she and RJ traveled all seven continents.
Alvida is survived by her children Douglas and his wife Karen, Duncan, Deborah, and Daniel and his wife Barbara; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many wonderful nieces and nephews, both grand and great.
She especially appreciated the love and assistance of her grand-nephew Matthew Fielder, who was a compassionate and loving caregiver to her and RJ for many years.
Alvida was predeceased by her husband of 69 years, Ralph John, and her favorite son in law, Philip Pearce.
The Rev. Cathlin Baker will conduct a private graveside service at the West Tisbury Cemetery on June 28 at 11 a.m. Following the service, the family will celebrate Alvida’s remarkable life at her home in West Tisbury, starting at 3 p.m. All are welcome.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury, P.O. Box 3000, PMB 3111, West Tisbury, MA 02575.
