Albert A. (Albie) White of Edgartown died peacefully on May 28, surrounded by his loving daughters. He was 94.
He was the husband of the late Wilda J. White.
Albie was born on Dec. 9, 1928 in Oak Bluffs. He was the son of Antone F. White and Mary Caton who immigrated from St. Miguel, Portugal to raise their family of seven.
He attended the Oak Bluffs School. With his brothers, he started working for the family business — White Brothers Construction — which was started by his father in the late 1920s. He and his brothers eventually took over the business and developed it into a very well-known, highly-respected and successful Island enterprise. They sold White Brothers Construction in 1995.
He loved driving big machinery, spending winters in Florida, his large vegetable gardens, cutting his lawn on his ride on mower, and taking rides in his truck — often accompanied in later years by his sister Katie Mazza.
Albie and his wife Wilda had four beautiful daughters and raised them on Hillman Drive and eventually out at Oyster Pond in Edgartown. He was a doting husband and father whose life was centered around his immediate and extended family. He loved having his family together on Sundays, spending time with his grandchildren and attending their events throughout the years. He never learned how to swim but that didn’t keep him off the beach and in the water with them.
The greatest pleasure of his life though were his 14 great-grandchildren. He adored them and absolutely relished in their presence; the feeling was mutual.
He was the quintessential gentleman and family man. He was incredibly loved by his family and friends, who will miss his gentle smile, stories, love, and how he rubbed people’s hands in his big “paw” of a hand every time he talked to someone. He always made people feel as though they were the most important person in the room.
Albie is survived by his daughters, Debra Scott and her husband Tom of Edgartown, Shauna White-Smith and her husband Mark of Edgartown, and Toni Hanover and her husband Marc of Oak Bluffs; his son in law Donald Mor
way of Edgartown; and sister Katherine Mazza of Oak Bluffs; nine grandchildren, Michael Snowden II and his wife Allison, Natasha Snowden Cornock and her husband Bryan, Christopher Scott and his wife Kelly, all of Edgartown, Timothy Scott and his wife Lauren of Oak Bluffs, Jaime Schwab and her husband Jason, Samantha Piland and her husband Anthony, Lindsay Hopkins and her husband Rhamale, and Brandon Smith, all of Vineyard Haven; and Tony Lima and his wife Emily of Oak Bluffs.
He is also survived by his 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Wilda J. White, daughters Lisa M. White and Tina M. White, brothers Joseph White, Lester White and George White, and his sisters Evelyn White and Mary White Eglinas.
His family thanks Dr. Beth Donnelly and VNA Hospice for all of their care and support, especially Cheryl, Jackie, Nancy and Sandy.
