John Alva Willoughby Jr. died unexpectedly on July 14. He was 74.

He was born on Nov. 20, 1948 on Martha’s Vineyard.

Being born on an Island, John very much had a laid-back personality. All those who met him would describe him as a kind man with a gentle demeanor as well as a gentleman. He would gladly lend a hand to help someone in need and would always be quietly present for those who meant the most in his life. He will be remembered for his open-minded, warm, loving and supportive nature.

A man of few words, he expressed himself as an author, writer and prolific poet. He was an intellect whose children described him as their walking encyclopedia.

He was a life master bridge player and president of the bridge club. He enjoyed his time playing and teaching the game to the next generation of players.

He enjoyed playing the piano, completing crossword puzzles, cross-country skiing and spending time with family. He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan who followed the games and knew many of the stats.

John leaves his family to cherish his memory, including his beloved wife of 37 years, Kathryn Broyles-Willoughby, his daughter Katelyn and son in law Ben, daughter Emily, son Sean and daughter in law Emilie Rose, sister Bebe and her husband Charles; brother in law Bruce; grandchildren Scarlett Mai, Rylie, John (Jack) and Rose; and a large extended family.

He was predeceased by his mother Louise Kimball, father John Alva Willoughby Sr. and sister Ursula.

A celebration of John’s life will take place on August 5 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Hartford Bridge Club located at 19A Andover Drive in West Hartford, Conn. All are welcome to attend this remembrance.

Memorial donations can be made to the Hartford Bridge Club — an important and special place for John — to allow them to continue sharing his love of the game with future generations.
