Woodford C. (Woodie) Cushman died of natural causes on Sept. 13 at the Westerly Hospital in Westerly, R.I. He was 91.
He was born Jan. 31, 1932. He led an eventful life of travel, gardening, feeding wildlife and birdwatching. He was an Air Force veteran who was stationed in Greenland during the Korean conflict.
Prior to moving to Rhode Island, he lived on Martha’s Vineyard for many years and where he has many friends. If he wasn’t working, he was usually found at the Edgartown fire department as a volunteer fireman or at the Rod and Gun Club, where he was a member.
In 2000, while at his Mount Kisco High School class reunion, he met up with Joan Wesley, a longtime school friend. He and Joan soon married and they moved to Westerly. He was a member of the Calvary Church in Stonington, Conn. In later years he enjoyed cooking fish and chips for the Portuguese Club of Stonington.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Wesley, and a large blended family: daughter Beth and Bill Erickson of Maine, daughters Tracy of Florida and Sandra of Martha’s Vineyard, step-children and their spouses: Frank and Sue Wesley of Westerly, Elizabeth and Tony Mikkelson of South Carolina, daughter in law Peggy Cushman of Virginia, along with many grandchildren, great- and great-great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his son David Cushman and daughter Rebecca Cushman Vincello.
