Frederic Daniel Mascolo of Edgartown and formerly of Waterbury, Conn. died on August 30 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. He was 65. Islanders knew him as Trader Fred.
He was a wonderful son, brother, uncle and friend to many.
Fred was born in Waterbury, Conn. on Sept. 13, 1957, the son of the late Frederic E. Mascolo and Irene J. Mascolo. He attended the McTernan School, Holy Cross High School and Fairfield University.
He was pursuing a career in law when he realized his place was Martha’s Vineyard, his favorite summer retreat. The Vineyard became home for him over the past 40-plus years. He owned and operated Trader Fred’s and Jane Brown Realty in Edgartown and was an authorized distributor of Arturo Fuente Cigars, along with many other ventures. He was affectionately known to Islanders as well as many famous personalities.
Fred was always willing to help in some way. For many years he served on the Edgartown planning board and was a former president of the Edgartown Board of Trade. He was a member of the Oriental-Martha’s Vineyard Masonic Lodge in Oak Bluffs for almost 40 years.
He had a passion for movies and had the honor of becoming a member of the Screen Actors Guild for being cast in multiple famous movies.
He is survived by his mother Irene J. Mascolo of Southbury, Conn. and his brother Ed, his wife Heidi and their three sons Chase, Reed and Cole, all of Fairfield, Conn.
His memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Edgartown on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at the New Westside Cemetery in
Edgartown. A celebration of life will follow at Town Bar MV on Upper Main street in Edgartown.
Many people will miss Trader Fred. Rest in peace.
