Photographer and Amherst resident Michael Roi Zide died on Feb. 14 in Northampton.

Born in 1944, he grew up in Los Angeles, the son of Beatrice and Harry Zide, a highly successful surgeon.

In 1969, Michael moved to Martha’s Vineyard, where he shot assignments for the Vineyard Gazette and later became staff photographer for The Grapevine.

In 1982, he and his wife, Jana, moved to Amherst. He took pictures for colleges and schools all over western Massachusetts and product, portrait and events photography.

From 2008 to 2016, he taught at the Hallmark School of Photography in Turner’s Falls, returning to freelance work when it closed.

He was a truly gifted teacher, emphasizing the importance of imagination, inspiration and individuality. Many of his students stayed in touch with him for years after graduation.

Michael’s own photography focused on nature, in the tradition of Ansel Adams, Minor White and others. He captured the beauty of the Vineyard beaches, the Valley’s fertile farmland — and the surprising appearance of a moose in the front yard. A devoted lover and defender of nature and all its creatures (including a series of beloved dogs, the last being Emma the Mini Pin), Michael donated photographs, time and money to various conservancy and animal-welfare organizations.

Michael will always be remembered for his warm presence and the kindness that radiated from his smile. He welcomed many into his family by showing care and affection. He was predeceased by his wife, Jana. He is greatly missed by his son, Noah, and his many friends.

A memorial service for Michael and his wife, Jana Zide, will be held May 16, at 11 a.m., at Grace Episcopal Church, in Amherst, to be followed by a reception.
