Miriam (Mimi) Arkwell Cook died on May 9. She was 98.
Mimi was born on Jan. 24, 1926 in Dayton, Ohio. Her father was a choral conductor having studied at Westminster Choir College in New Jersey.
She had a golden soprano voice and sang in many churches, weddings and other special events throughout the Ohio and New England regions. She also worked as a copywriter at WNAC radio in Boston.
In the late 1940’s, she met and married Richard Burton Cook. “Speed,” as he was known to his friends, would eventually become an executive with Ray-O-Vac Inc.
Together, they were a dynamic couple with an innate “love of people” quality. Folks were helplessly and completely drawn to them. Wherever they lived — New Jersey, Wisconsin, Massachusetts or Florida — their homes were always overflowing with friends, family or acquaintances.
In addition to her love of music, Mimi had other artistic talents. She enjoyed painting and drawing and was actively involved with civic music and theatrical organizations. She had a long-time relationship with Martha’s Vineyard, having spent summers in the Campgrounds in Oak Bluffs, beginning as a teenager and lasting throughout her married years. During retirement, she and Speed lived in a beautiful old Captain’s home located just a block off Main street in Vineyard Haven. Her final move was “across the pond” to Mashpee on the Cape where they enjoyed their family and a condominium in Southport.
Mimi leaves behind a son, two daughters, a sister, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two nieces and a nephew.
There will be a celebration of Mimi’s incredible life on July 6 at the Seacrest Resort in North Falmouth.
