Mary Priscilla (Palmer) Thifault died at her home in Vineyard Haven on April 14. She was 88.
Priscilla was born in Stamford, Conn. to Madeline and Willian R. Palmer. She was the sister of Reverend Michael Palmer, Diana (Palmer) Yeakel, William R. Palmer III. and Richard T. Palmer. She was the devoted wife of the late Frederick W. Thifault and the loving mother of nine children, 22 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
She graduated from Stamford High School in 1953, where she was described by many as “one of the sweetest gals I’ve had the pleasure of knowing." She then went on to graduate from Katherine Gibbs in 1955. She moved with her family to Martha’s Vineyard in the early 1960’s.
She was involved with the community and the church. In fact, she won the Marian Award for her dedicated service as a member of the Saint Augustine Church in Vineyard Haven. She and her late husband were also members of the American Legion Post 257 in Vineyard Haven and she would volunteer on behalf of that organization on a regular basis. Her volunteer work also included Birthright and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
In addition to being a talented artist and wonderful cook, she was a passionate gardener and world traveler including Europe, North America and the Caribbean. Her other hobbies included painting, ceramics and, in her early years, sewing clothing for her family.
She will be remembered mostly for her heartfelt kindness, embracing warmth, a cheerful nature and a playful sense of humor. Always sweet, endearing and loving, she was true to herself and those around her. In the most uncontrived and genuine manner, she unabashedly shared her love.
In the simplest terms, she grounded us all. She had a calming effect that made her attractive. We will sorely miss her presence in our lives and we will cherish the memories we have shared. She is at peace now, reaping the benefits of a life well-lived.
She was predeceased by a son, Thomas Habekost. She is survived by her children: Bill Habekost, Madeline Denis (Mike), Linda Habekost, Sally Sylvia, Barbara Fletcher (Jim), John Habekost, Chris Habekost (Marcela) and Mike Habekost.
A memorial mass was celebrated on June 2024. Mary was laid to rest at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Vineyard Haven.
