Carole M. Langan, of Vineyard Haven and Amelia Island, Fla., died on Sept. 11 in Fernandina Beach, Fla. She was 79.

Carole was the daughter of the late Hon. James M. Langan and Eleanor F. (Crofwell) Langan. She was born in Boston and grew up in Jamaica Plain.

Following her graduation from Notre Dame Academy in Roxbury (now in Hingham), she received a B.A. degree in art history from Newton College of the Sacred Heart (which later merged into Boston College).

Upon completion of training in Washington, D.C., Carole obtained certification in the Montessori education method. She taught kindergarten in Norwell and at the Elliot-Pearson Children’s School in Medford.

She earned a master’s degree in education from Tufts University.

In the 1970s, she lived for four years in Ireland, which elevated her regard for her Irish heritage. She later worked at the Boston Document Exchange and as a commodities trader while living in Hawaii. She had also extensively traveled around much of Europe.

Although in her earlier years she was a skier and an ice skater, Carole developed a strong aversion to cold weather, and so resided in various locales throughout the Caribbean islands and Florida. She was a lover of the seashore, especially Cape Cod and the Islands.

Since 2008, she was a part-time resident of Martha’s Vineyard and had volunteered at the annual Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival.

When asked, Carole never refused a good glass of wine.

She is survived by her sisters Jane Allan of Bainbridge Island, Wash. and Nora (Nancy) Langan of Seattle, her brother James Langan, Jr. of Boston, and her dear friend Dana McCoy of Fernandina Beach, Fla.

A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Victory, Centerville, on Oct. 8 at 11 a.m. Interment at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Centerville.
