Althea G. (Sunny) Wilson of Fitchburg died Oct. 17 in the Health Alliance Leominster Hospital. She was 91.
Sunny was born in Bronx, N.Y., on Dec. 1, 1932, the only child of the late Josiah and Edna (Luchesi) Gibson. She grew up in Bergen County, N.J., and graduated from Ridgewood High School. She received an associate degree at Centenary College (now Centenary University) and then briefly attended Syracuse University and Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham University). Later on, with her three children in school, she earned a bachelor of fine arts degree at Paterson State College (now William Paterson University).
She taught English in Panama while her husband was stationed there in the Army, and art to children with mental disabilities at Hohokus Public School in New Jersey.
After she moved to Connecticut in 1974, she became active with the Silvermine Art Studio and pursued her love of making art through drawing and sculpting. She also trained her Portuguese water dog in agility and entered numerous competitions. While in Connecticut, and later in retirement, she and her husband enjoyed spending time on their sailboat.
Sunny and her husband retired to Martha’s Vineyard in 1994 where they lived on Chappaquiddick until 2021. There, she served as a volunteer instructor for an adult reading program. She and her husband were active members of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Martha’s Vineyard.
Her husband of 70 years, Alan O. Wilson, died in December 2023.
She is survived by her two daughters, Amy Wilson of Ashby and Kim Wilson of Emmaus, Pa.; six grandchildren, Rosalie Fry, Jaimie Fry, Lauren Bryson, Brian Wilson, Thomas Wilson, and Christopher Wilson and two great-grandchildren, Jayden Fry and Parker Wilson. In addition to her husband, she
was predeceased by a son, Scott Wilson, who died in 2022.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 11 a.m. in the T. J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 250 Main St., Townsend. Visitation will be held prior to the service in the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m.
