Gerald C. Surprenant, 81, of Little Compton, R.I. peacefully died at home on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025 with his family by his side. He was the husband of Nancy J. (O’Hara) Surprenant, they shared 56 years of marriage.

Gerry was born in New Bedford, son of the late Roger and Estelle (Morency) Surprenant and had resided in Little Compton since 2014. He graduated from UMass Amherst and was also a graduate of Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I.

He then served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. From 1970 to 1988, Gerry was a commercial real estate banker with several banks in the Providence area. Prior to retirement in 2018, he worked as a commercial real estate broker for MG Commercial, Providence.

He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, Westport.

An avid outdoorsman, Gerry enjoyed tennis, bike riding and fishing. He found happiness in life’s simple pleasures like tending to his yard and garden. When his grandchildren were little, his greatest joy was giving them rides on the lawnmower.

Gerry enjoyed celebrating holidays and special occasions with his family at the family home in Oak Bluffs. His bank buddies and former tennis partners gathered with him in Little Compton reminiscing about old times. Gerry looked forward to his annual trips to Boca Grande, Fla., where he and his wife loved the beauty that surrounded them.

Survivors along with his wife include his daughter: Sarah L. Kelly and her husband William of Arlington, MA; his brother: Dennis Surprenant of Fla.; four sisters: Muriel O’Rourke of MA, Jeanne Popielarcz of N.H., Renee Nolan of MA and Diane Beckwith of Ga.; three grandchildren: Jack Kelly, Grace Kelly and Christopher Kelly; along with many nieces and nephews.

Memorial service to which relatives and friends are invited will be Saturday, March 1, 2025 at the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Rd., Westport, MA 02790 at 2:30 p.m.

Memorial visitation will be Saturday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. prior to the service.

Interment will be private.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Veterans Association of Bristol County at THEVABC.ORG
