Sarah Bradbury Rorer (Sally), 78, of Naples, Fla., Philadelphia, Pa., and Edgartown died peacefully on Feb. 23, 2025 in the loving arms of her husband after losing her year-long battle to cancer.
Born on March 5, 1946, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of Samuel and Sarah Vanneman Bradbury. She is survived by her husband of 57 years Edward C. Rorer (Ted), her brother Samuel Bradbury IV (Sandy), and her sister Althea Bradbury Bullard (Tia). She is also survived by her daughters Sarah Rorer Brown (Brooke) and Amélie Rorer Conley (Marshall) as well as her sons in law Eric C. Brown and Ed Conley. Lastly, she is survived by her three granddaughters Sarah Campbell Brown, Amélie Copeland Brown and Charlotte Chapman Brown, all of whom called her “Sassy.”
She attended Ravenhill Academy before attending Wheaton College, from which she graduated in 1968. At Wheaton, she was a prominent member of the college’s premier singing group, the Wheatones.
Sassy was classy. She dressed beautifully and carried herself with an elegant bearing. At every turn, she strove for perfection. At the same time, she had an outgoing personality that exhibited a flair for fun and excitement. She loved to dance and was always the life of the party. She had exquisite taste, well reflected in her sense of style.
She had an acute sense of the visual: appearances were very important to her, ranging from architecture to choice of clothing and everything in between. In addition, she had extensive horticultural expertise in landscape design as well as in gardening, both of which she loved.
Artistically gifted, she created many exquisite sailor’s valentines and intricate Nantucket baskets.
Over the course of her lifetime Sally had various leadership roles in organizations of which she was a member. She was active in the educational institutions of her children’s early years, serving as a trustee and chair of the board of the Washington Crossing Nursery School and as a trustee of the Buckingham Friends School.
As a resident of Naples Fla., Sally enjoyed the Port Royal community in which she lived and served as trustee and president of the Port Royal Club. In addition, she was active in the family’s summer community in Edgartown.
At the Edgartown Yacht Club, she served as a trustee, chaired the house committee, served on the membership committee and oversaw the production of the club’s 100th anniversary commemorative book, celebrating the club’s heritage and traditions.
She had a particular affection for the Vineyard Preservation Trust. She served that organization in multiple roles, including as a trustee, chair of the board, and even as executive director when the person holding that position resigned abruptly.
Indeed, she had a special place in her heart for Martha’s Vineyard, often saying to friends and family “my heart and soul are on the Vineyard.”
Sally loved the game of golf and was very active at the Edgartown Golf Club and at the Vineyard Golf Club where she was a trustee for 10 years. She served as the Vineyard Golf Club’s vice president and chair of the house committee during her tenure.
As an avid golfer, Sally was well known for her remarkable pace of play. She reveled in going out to the Vineyard Golf Club first thing in the morning to play by herself and to be the first one off the tee. Flying solo, she would often complete 18 holes in under two hours.
An elegant lady has left us. The organizations she served so faithfully will miss her enlightened leadership and her family and friends mourn her passing with great sorrow.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, Sally would have been most grateful if donations were made in her honor to the Vineyard Preservation Trust, P.O. Box 5277 Edgartown MA 02539.
