Carol Ruth Gross, of Bethesda, Md. and Chilmark, died peacefully on May 9. She was the beloved wife of Richard (Dick) L. Gross, and devoted mother of H. Daniel Gross, Louise (Nevin) Reynolds and Deborah (David) Meisel.

She was the grandmother of Aidan Gross, Jared and Ethan Reynolds and Gabrielle, Samuel and Zachary Meisel, and sister of David (Betsy) Wice.

She was a daughter of Rabbi David H. Wice and Sophie Salzer Wice of Philadelphia.

Carol was a passionate civil rights activist, a dedicated educator and a steadfast advocate for those whose voices too often went unheard. Her life’s work empowered others and left an enduring legacy of justice, compassion and courage.

She and Dick were together for 67 years, rarely spending a day apart. Within the past weeks she received a bouquet of roses to mark the anniversary of their first date.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 11 at Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park, Clarksburg, Md.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the League of Women Voters at lwv.org.
