Saturday and Sunday the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) held its annual Island powwow at the Aquinnah Circle. Native drumming and dancing reverberated over Moshup Beach as different tribes joined the Wampanoags to celebrate their anniversary of federal recognition. The Vineyard tribe’s powwow marks the end of an extensive Southeastern Massachusetts powwow circuit and included traditional instrument demonstrations, a brief oral history of the Vineyard tribe's origin, and a tribute to tribal members who died in the previous year.
