The day dawned humid and hazy on Vineyard Haven harbor. Soon after runners gathered in Vineyard Haven to start the day with a five-mile race along West Chop, while in Oak Bluffs the Polar Bears gathered in the early morning, as they do daily during the summer, for a swim in Nantucket Sound. In Edgartown flags were hung on every storefront and bunting adorned fences as joggers made their way down the brick sidewalks. The Vineyard Sound sang an a capella version of the Star-Spangled Banner on South Water street. Young parents tried to get their toddler to pose for a photo and a passenger in a passing vehicle leaned out of the window to capture it all on her phone. It is the Fourth of July, 2018, on the Vineyard.
