Warmer weather invites venturing out on bikes, here on East Chop Drive. Timothy Johnson

Memorial Day signals a clear turning point in the Island year. The long weekend carries two messages, one official, the other unofficial. It offers a time to remember and honor those fallen in battle and a moment to celebrate the gathering of summer. Now comes the season of arrival.

There can be no argument about the season turning. The signs are everywhere. Already the ferries are jammed on weekends and even weekdays. The traffic in village streets is heavier and even now parking spots are at a premium. Seasonal businesses are opening, it seems, by the hour and in the evening the lights come on in homes that were dark only days ago.

Meanwhile, we welcome all who are returning to the Vineyard for the three-day holiday weekend, and we wish for everyone a good and prosperous summer ahead.
