Familiar places become wondrously new in the recast light of October. This is never more evident than at the edges of the day, when you can’t help but notice a clean, fine quality in the light as the first beams of the sun — or the last — slant across lawns and open places. Already the huckleberry on hillsides and in old fields is beginning to show tinges of red, a taste of the colorful show to come. Too soon, the leaves will be underfoot, and children will scuffle to school and play afterwards amid piles stacked high.
