They come armed with snow shovels, long underwear and blades of sharpened steel on their feet. Ice skaters headed straight for the Island's shallower ponds, the first to ice over as a deep freeze gripped the Vineyard. And for those without skates, wandering the Island in winter was a treat in itself.
