Sculpting a Greener World, Week by Week

In a tiny cottage dotted with colorful buoys, nestled in the front yard of her Vineyard Haven home, Marnie Stanton has hung a handful of her colorful abstract sculptures, made from driftwood and colorful electrical wire and theatre gels. The pieces are only a tiny sliver of the complete body of work — some 30 sculptures in all, with many more to come.

Paint the Town Red, or Any Color You Like

The Louisa Gould Gallery is offering an oil painting workshop on Tuesday, August 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with Christopher Pendergast.

The workshop will begin with a brief demonstration on starting a painting in oils including; set up, materials, laying out a palette, and choosing a subject matter. Blocking out space, the correct use of medium, and drawing with brushes and paint will also be covered. Attendees will then work in the materials of their choice.

Drawing and painting teacher Janice Frame had reason to be proud of Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School senior Lonni Philips’ success last week at Featherstone Center for the Arts. Ms. Philips has, after all, been a student of Ms. Frame’s since kindergarten, when her work most likely consisted of finger paintings and play dough sculptures.

Shaw Cramer Gallery Takes It to Second Level

It’s Double Features at the Shaw Cramer Gallery for the summer season. The first double show — one on each level — opens with an artists’ reception on Friday, July 2, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Eisenhauer Gallery’s second exhibit of the season, entitled Embody, opens Thursday, July 15, with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. with libations and live music by Mike Benjamin

Tyvek Adds Texture to Abstract Exhibit

Roberta Gross will host an opening reception today, Friday, June 11 from 4 to 6 p.m. for an exhibit of her abstract paintings at the Chilmark branch of the Bank of Martha’s Vineyard on South Road. The exhibit will run through June 18.

In her art, Ms. Gross plays with colors, textures, shapes and lines, arranging and rearranging fragments of paper she has created by stamping, burning, splattering, embossing and texturing with gels and acrylic pastes.

Influence of Stan Murphy Discussed by Island Artists

In connection with the Martha’s Vineyard Museum’s current exhibit From Concept to Canvas: Selected Works of Stanley Murphy, noted Island artists and friends including Kib Bramhall, Tess Bramhall, Bob Doran, Allen Whiting and Rez Wiliams are coming together to discuss the painter’s life, work and influence at Thursday, August 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the Federated Church in Edgartown.

Led by the museum’s chief curator, Bonnie Stacy, the panel will give the audience an insight into the life of the Vineyard artist.
