Chilmark Selectmen Respond to Incident, Tweaking Community Center Rental Policy

Chilmark selectmen may in the future consider changes to the rental policy for the Chilmark Community Center, including requiring a certified bartender or a designated supervisor for events where alcohol is served, following a recent incident involving alcohol when a Menemsha fisherman was arrested at a memorial service event at the center.

This week selectmen called for a review of the rental policy for the center, which is often used for social events such as weddings, birthdays and memorial services, where alcohol is served.

Future Actress Is Frank About Quality

Each week this summer, until this Wednesday, which is the last, the folks at Cinema Circus show a series of short films at the Chilmark Community Center. The films begin at 6 p.m. but at 5 p.m. the circus, complete with jugglers, face painters, stilt walkers, food and music, gets underway.

An advanced screening of the films is arranged with a young Island cineaste, plucked from the age bracket of the target audience. In a world with few certainties, the kid critic is the critic to trust.

No Relief from Heat in Debate on Israel

It was a Chilmark showdown Sunday night: on one side was the noted civil liberties lawyer, law professor and author Alan Dershowitz. On the other was author Peter Beinart, an associate professor of journalism and an editor at the Daily Beast.

The debate centered on Mr. Beinart’s recent book, The Crisis of Zionism, and differing views about the future of Israel. A large crowd at the Chilmark Community Center watched the two spar, sometimes heatedly, in a debate moderated by author Richard North Patterson.

This Saturday, Jan 7, the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival throws open the doors of the Chilmark Community Center for another night of films and food. At 5 p.m. there is a program of short films for kids and at 6:30 p.m. Chris Fischer takes the stage with a farm fresh meal. Todd Christy provides his Chilmark Coffee and Amy Miller brings on the sweet treats.
