East Chop Homeowner, Town Clash over Construction Plans

A home building project in East Chop that has long been at odds with the town is set to come before the Oak Bluffs zoning board of appeals for further review next week.

Leslie Hayling, a New Jersey dentist, has been rebuilding a home and garage apartment for nearly 10 years on Dempster Park. In a sharply-worded letter to Dr. Hayling last summer, Oak Bluffs building inspector James Dunn ordered the removal of a long list of additions that were not included in a 2005 special permit.

News Update: Tuesday, July 24 - Scallop Boat Runs Aground off East Chop

The 84-foot fishing boat Kris & Amy grounded two miles east of East Chop on Hedge Fence Shoal on Monday afternoon and required the attention of several salvage firms to free her last night.

Senior Chief Jamey Kinney of Coast Guard Sector Woods Hole said that a call came in from the vessel at 12:55 p.m. that she had run aground in 11 feet of water. Coast Guard Station Woods Hole responded. The vessel, a sea scalloper with a blue hull and white superstructure, remained stuck through the afternoon.

Light at East Chop Celebrates Birthday with a House Party

People love lighthouses. When you enter the word into Google's
search engine, 44,800,000 sites pop up. There are lighthouse magazines,
magnets and sweatshirts. The New England region even has its own fan
group dedicated to the structure - New England Lighthouse Lovers.
"Lighthouses are modern day castles," said Craig Dripps,
president of the East Chop Association. "They have a sense of
magic and history. They hold secrets."

East Chop Bungalow Turns 100

There is a centennial house on East Chop, and last week the owners put on an afternoon birthday party for the old girl. Robert S. Blacklow and his wife Winifred (Wini) dressed up for the occasion; the house was dressed up too.

The house at 143 Munroe avenue looked the part. Set back from East Chop Drive, the old summer bungalow has a wide porch furnished with classic wicker furniture. Inside there is more period furniture and a huge fireplace.

Remember the old Montgomery house on East Chop Drive across from the Bordes? Michaele and Al Christian from Washington, D.C. purchased the house in 1999. After summering in it for seven years, they decided that a radical makeover was in order. For one thing, the constant need for a fresh coat of paint had gotten out of hand.
