They came bearing shovels and spades, clad in their swimsuits to participate in the Sand Sculpture Contest at South Beach on Wednesday. The annual event is sponsored by the Edgartown Board of Trade, and bestows upon participants prizes for the best sand sculptures in both junior and adult categories.

More than 60 participants traded in their books and bowls for sculpting tools on August 1 for the Edgartown Board of Trade’s annual sand sculpture contest, held at South Beach. Sand creations included a giant dog bowl, a mermaid, Pac Man and a shark chowing down on a swimmer’s leg, as well as a number of Olympic-themed creations. The winners, as judged by Jeff Donaroma, Libby Ellis, Bonnie DeSousa, Carlos DeSousa and Abbey Smith, are as follows.

You don’t need to surf to be a professional beach bum; if you get good enough, you can travel the world carving sandcastles with a palette knife and an ice cream scoop. That’s what Lucinda “Sandy Feet” Wierenga does. Ms. Wierenga was this year’s winner of the Travel Channel’s Sand Blasters competition. She’s in Italy now, giving castle-building demonstrations. And Ms Wierenga will be here from 2 to 5 p.m.

South Beach an Expo For Sand Sculptors

More than a hundred people headed down to South Beach last Wednesday to participate in the fifth annual Sand Sculpture Contest. At stake were a blue ribbon, a cash prize and a lot of pride.

When the four-hour sculpting period ended, five judges made their way down the beach, marking 18 adult sculptures and 15 junior sculptures on the following criteria: originality, details, structural difficulty and overall design.
