For Phil Hale, winning the Walter Cronkite Award from SailMV this summer was an honor that came with extra meaning. The longtime owner of Martha’s Vineyard Shipyard, Mr. Hale was personally acquainted with the late broadcast journalist, a devoted sailor who summered in Edgartown for decades.
Walter Cronkite, CBS Evening News anchorman from 1962 to 1981, and a devoted Edgartown seasonal resident for more than three decades, died on Friday at his home in New York after a lengthy illness. He was 92.
The late Walter Cronkite’s Edgartown down-harbor home was sold this week for $11.3 million to longtime summer residents of Katama David and Karen Brush.
The Green Hollow property is located where the first white men settled for the winter on Martha’s Vineyard in 1632.
