The traditional end of summer Herreshoff Cup Race included a twist this year, with the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club competing in the race for the first time and playing host.
A dream which many Vineyard Haven people have cherished for years is about to be realized in the establishment of a yacht club in that town. Between fifteen and twenty boats have already been ordered and about fifty persons are ready to sign the club articles as members as soon as the organization is incorporated.
Quarters on the waterfront are to be obtained and put in condition for the use of the club before next season and all lovers of water sports, ships and salt water are filled with enthusiasm.
The Vineyard Haven Yacht Club is observing its 80th summer. The Edgartown Yacht Club is hosting more summer sailing events than it did a year ago. Sail Martha’s Vineyard is gearing up for its big sailing classic Vineyard Cup in mid-July. The Holmes Hole Sailing Association has launched its Sunday and Thursday races.

The Vineyard Haven Yacht Club has a new headquarters. The Edgartown Yacht Club has acquired property for a junior sailing center on Chappaquiddick. The Holmes Hole Sailing Association, the only sailing organization on the Island without a building, has a full roster of 25 events planned throughout the season.
The Mallory Trophy was originally offered to Lord Horatio Nelson by the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire after the admiral’s victory over Napoleon on the Nile. Now it belongs to two Vineyard sailors after their victory over the field in the U.S. Men’s Sailing National Championship.
After a windy weekend in Sheboygan, Mich., the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club’s Paul Wilson and William Stevens, along with the Naragansett Yachting Association’s John Plominski, won the most prestigious amateur event in sailing in thrilling style.
