The broad redesign of the area, with a roundabout and larger pedestrian walkways, is aimed at revamping the congested parking area. The project should be completed by Memorial Day, Oak Bluffs officials said.

The Patriot boat line has cut its shuttle schedule in half in response to the recently-enacted construction bans on the Island.

At 4:30 a.m. on Saturday the day's newspapers arrived on the Quickwater, better known as the Patriot Boat. So did boxes of bagels bound for Espresso Love and Mocha Motts after being boiled to perfection at Cape Cod Bagel in Falmouth.

At 5:30 in the morning on a recent Saturday, Yann Meersseman parked his minivan outside of the Steamship Authority building in Vineyard Haven and dropped a few tokens into the yellow Boston Herald display box. He pulled open the box and changed the front copy of the Herald, placing a short stack of newspapers inside the box as he did so.
