At one end of the Oak Bluffs Arts Stroll, at the glasswork studio of Jeri Dantzig, soothing harp music lured strollers into a colorful glass menagerie of assorted dishwares, barrettes, and other glass pieces. Dantzig’s first arts stroll appearance was slightly off the beaten path (on Vineyard Ave.), a fitting location for her glasswares, which feature funky greens and blues, loopy designs and stained glass platters. The Wire
Steve Lohman will unveil a new series of large scale wire sculptures this Sunday at the Old Sculpin Gallery on Dock street in Edgartown. Mr. Lohman is known locally and internationally for his playful steel and wire sculptures. Graceful and whimsical, his lyrical creations capture the subtleties of life and form with a single line. There will be an artist’s reception Sunday, July 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibit will run through August 1.
Shaw Cramer Lights Up
Luminous defines the fourth spotlight 2009 show at Shaw Cramer Gallery from July 17 to 30. Ten artists, including Island artists Eva Gallant and Andrea Hartman, present artwork with luster and light. Collages of iridescent glass with stone, knitted wire, miniature sculptures of luminous bead-covered vessels, silk appliqued pillows, glass lanterns and a lighted tall clock of bird’s-eye maple and stainless steel combine to create a shimmering collection.
Dragonfly Gallery’s Summer Heat show will offer a wide variety of artwork, photography and sculpture from the 30 artists who are currently represented by the Gallery. Refreshments, beverages, and fine art will be served during the ever-popular arts district stroll on Saturday, July 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. The show will hang until July 26.
The July arts district stroll is a wonderful opportunity to explore the depth and breadth of the national and regional artists represented at the Dragonfly.
Michael Zide grew up without seasons. He remembers being transfixed as a child by a snowfall in his hometown of Los Angeles, a magical moment that made a deep impact on his life. When he began to pursue an interest in photography at age 22, he found himself drawn to the changing seasons and their impact on the landscape of the East Coast.
Vineyard Landscapes
A reception to mark the opening of an exhibition of oil paintings of Vineyard landscapes by Linda Thompson will be held today, Friday, July 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibition is at the Chilmark branch of the Bank of Martha’s Vineyard (near Beetlebung Corner). It continues until July 23 and is open during business hours.
